A concise guide on obtaining a temporary student visa in Canada

Student Visa

Canada is a world leader in education. Both publicly funded and private Canadian schools are highly regarded by business, government and academic circles around the world. It is also very affordable. You do not need a study permit if you are planning to study for a short term in a Canadian educational program for six months or less.

To be considered you must:

  • Be able to speak English or French well enough to participate in classes. (How much you need to know depends on the grade level and the school you are in).
  • Know what courses are required to enter your school of choice.
  • Know how much it costs to apply for study in Canada. Each school, program and province is under a different set of regulations.
  • Find out how much it will cost to live near the school.

It is highly advised that students who wish to apply for another program after the completion of their initial studies apply for a study permit while they are still in Canada. If you leave Canada you will be required to return to your country and apply again to the Canadian Visa office closest to you. This process can be lengthy, and there is a higher possibility of refusal than if you completed the process while still in Canada.

Most foreign students will require a permit in order to study in Canada. Students who wish to attend school in Québec will need a Canadian and Quebec study permit.

Before entering Canada with a study permit you will need:

  • Proof of acceptance from the school you wish to attend
  • Proof that you have passed a medical exam
  • Proof you have enough money to pay school fees, room and board
  • Proof that you will return to your country at the end of your studies
  • Qualify as a temporary resident in Canada, and obtain a temporary resident visa if necessary

Canada’s individual provinces may have specific rules that will affect your application. Contact a local Canadian embassy or consulate for more information.
