The Oriental Republic of Uruguay is not a signatory to the Convention of 15 November 1965 on the Service Abroad of Judicial and Extrajudicial Documents in Civil or Commercial Matters, also called the Hague Service Convention.

Consequently, service of process in Uruguay must be effected through alternative methods.

About Serving Process in Uruguay

Service of process in Uruguay may be effected using one of two methods:

  1. Formal service pursuant to the Inter-American Convention on Letters Rogatory and Additional Protocol
  2. Informal service supervised by an Uruguayan attorney

This second method of service may not meet Uruguayan rules for service, so if enforcement of a US judgment in Uruguay is anticipated, litigants should consider serving pursuant to the Inter-American Convention on Letters Rogatory and Additional Protocol.

Translation Requirements

When serving process in Uruguay all documents (including the Letter Rogatory if that is the chosen method of service) must be translated into Spanish.
