Requirements for Certified Interpreters in Wyoming

Wyoming state authorities periodically offer exams, both written and oral, for certification in Spanish and other languages. Wyoming also requires certified interpreters for certain legal proceedings.

However, complainants, defendants and witnesses part of any court or grand jury proceedings who are deaf or who have a language barrier have the right to an interpreter pursuant to Rule 28 W.R.Cr.P. If legal interpreters are not available locally, judges may request the presence of a certified or otherwise qualified interpreter from outside the state if it is deemed necessary in court proceedings.

Classification of Interpreters in Wyoming

Wyoming has several classifications of legal interpreters.

• Independent Contract Language Interpreter: An interpreter who works as an independent contractor.

• Temporary or Periodic Contract Employee Language Interpreter: A language interpreter who is working under a temporary or periodic contract.

• Professionally Certified Interpreter: A language interpreter who has earned certification through a recognized interpreter certification program either in the State of Wyoming or another jurisdiction. An interpreter achieves certification by passing a written test in English, taking a 30-minute Oral Proficiency Interview, and attending a two-day seminar.

• Registered Interpreter: A language interpreter who has not earned certification but has met the minimum professional proficiency standards, as established by the Wyoming Supreme Court, to be considered for assignments when a professionally certified interpreter is not available.

• Qualified Interpreter: A language interpreter who has not met certification or registration requirements, as established by the Wyoming Supreme Court, but has been deemed qualified by the local court.
